Well, if I remember sci-fi novels, not that I read much of that, there are a lot of happy endings. War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, Blade Runner, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. So maybe no one would blame you for writing it with a happy ending? It could bring you a bit of luck back home.
At the very least, the motives are predictable? What sci-fi novel doesn't have them coming here for resources? It's honestly no different than what we do.

I think I'm in the same boat. Things would be more interesting and easier with them, but they wouldn't do well here. All their bad tendencies would come out.
